Red Heart

by Linda Hardin

Wind of the Great Spirit come
and blow across my soul
like smoke from fire circles extinguished long ago

Sting my eyes to remind me
of the bitter tears that fell
along the trail of suffering
my people knew so well

Take me back to the place were buffalo once roamed
where a people strong and proud
were forced to make their home

Help me to learn the ways of the old ones
Help me understand
the wisdom that they offer
as I reach out and take their hands

Help me to remember though my skin is pale and white
the heart that beats within me
is still precious in their sight

This body is a covering that I will someday shed
and the heart that beats within me is of one who's skin
is red
